How could a gun, essentially a lifeless object, have any pros or cons? If you think about it, the pros and cons of firearms most likely stem from the emotions people attach to firearms. True, many firearms in South Africa are being used to commit violent crime but does that make the gun bad, or the person using it? Guns are merely tools and are certainly not living things but there are certainly a large amount of pros, especially here in South Africa.
For one: Gun training is very easy to come by. Many gun shops and firing ranges are privately owned and staffed with gun owners and firearm experts. If you’re a new gun owner, these establishments can prove valuable in teaching you the essentials of owning a firearm. Secondly, your gun is yours. Contrary to popular belief, there are very few guns used by criminals that were stolen from licenced owners.
Lastly, of all the types of protection you can get, firearms must be the most reliable. Sure, not many people, even dedicated gun owners, feel squeamish on firing and possibly killing another human being but in the end it comes down to self-preservation. The armed thief who try to rob you or the armed rapist that wants to hurt your family couldn’t care less about your safety and concerns. On the contrary, he will kill you if you offer even the slightest bit of resistance. But owning a gun levels the playing field.
With adequate training and a good firearm, the pros in protecting your family far outweigh the cons.
